MapQuest won't talk to me

Voice navigation isn't working (iOS)

We want to get you where you need to go safely, and if you're not hearing your voice navigation we can help with that!

The first things to check are your volume settings. Please double check that the app's volume settings are set to loud (settings located in the bottom right-hand corner of the navigation screen), and that your phone's general volume settings are not muted and are on high.

If your volume settings look correct, you may need to force shut down your MapQuest app and reload it. To do that:

  1. Double-tap the home button on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Swipe up to close MapQuest
  3. Re-open the app

That should do the trick! If you're still having trouble please feel free to reach out to us and we'll see what else we can do. Fingers crossed though!

Using HFP and Bluetooth with the app (iOS)

What is the difference between HFP Bluetooth and A2DP Bluetooth?

HFP stands for Handsfree protocol and is a type of Bluetooth used to make voice calls. It's popular amongst car makers today, and allows users to take calls over their car's speakers without being affected by the audio input (Radio FM/AM, CD, AUX, etc.) of the device.

A2DP is another kind of Bluetooth output primarily used to stream media (such as music). Unlike HFP, only certain inputs on your car stereo, for example, can be used. With A2DP, you'll need to make sure your input is set to "Media" or "Bluetooth" (input names may vary).

How can I switch between HFP and A2DP in the MapQuest App?

Bluetooth can be a bit tricky, so the first step in trying to hear voice navigation over your car's speakers or Bluetooth device is to make sure that it supports one of these protocols.

Some cars/Bluetooth devices only support HFP; So, if you're connected via Bluetooth and not hearing any voice commands in your car, you'll need to enable HFP Bluetooth in the MapQuest App to be able to hear voice commands.

If your car/Bluetooth device only supports HFP or you prefer to use HFP:

  1. Make sure the Bluetooth device is paired wtih your phone
  2. In the MapQuest app, Tap Get Directions, enter your destination and tap Drive
  3. Tap Audio at the bottom right of the screen
  4. Toggle Play as Bluetooth Phone Call on (to green)
  5. You should now be able to use any audio input in your car to hear the MapQuest App

If your car/Bluetooth device supports A2DP (music):

  1. Make sure the Bluetooth device is paired with your phone
  2. Turn your Bluetooth device's input to either "Media" or "Bluetooth" (title may vary)
  3. Start your route in the MapQuest app
How to change volume settings in the app (iOS)

It's not always easy having someone telling you what to do, but when it comes to safety, voice navigation is the exception! To change your app's Voice Guidance and phone's Master Volume:

  1. Tap the Get Directions button at the top right of your screen
  2. Enter your destination and tap Drive
  3. Tap Audio at the bottom right of the screen
Tips and Tricks: When available, you can tap the audio output button menu to change the speaker output for your voice navigation.
