Sometimes it's easy to dismiss or deny that first request to allow a website to use your current location, and sometimes you'll run into technical problems with certain websites' ability to locate you. Regardless, if you run into any troubles around your browser or device not locating you properly, we're here to help!

If you've already given MapQuest permission to use your location within your browser or device, something you can try right away is to clear all of your cookies and cache - this can be an easy way to "restart" your MapQuest experience to get everything working properly.

Please note: Current Location estimation on MapQuest works best if you are connecting to the internet via Wi-Fi on your computer/laptop/device or cellular data on a smartphone or tablet. If you are connected to the internet using a hard-wired (ethernet) connection, the location we detect may be less accurate and more dependent on your internet service provider (ISP).
Why does MapQuest want to locate me?

MapQuest uses the latest and greatest in location technology to streamline your experiences with our products—whether that means finding the closest coffee shop for a quick cup o' joe, getting to a gas station before the tank hits "E," or just using your current location as a starting point for directions so you don't have to type it, we're all about convenience and simplifying the MapQuest experience!

Please note that while we do collect and share some location data with select AOL partners, your privacy remains a top concern and we collect all of this data anonymously. Any data collected around your experience is always treated in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Internet Explorer location troubleshooting

Since there are a few different versions of the Internet Explorer browser, and with the recent addition of the Edge browser to Windows 10, we'd prefer to avoid bombarding you with tons of technical steps that you may not even need.

Google Chrome location troubleshooting

In your Chrome browser, you can easily verify that MapQuest.com has permission to use your location by following these easy steps:

  1. Click the Chrome menu icon in the top right
  2. Click “Settings,” then "Show advanced settings..." at the bottom
  3. Under Privacy, click “Content settings” and scroll to the Location section
  4. We recommend selecting "Ask when a site tries to track your physical location" so you'll be notified when a site like MapQuest asks to use your location
  5. Click the "Manage exceptions" link if you accidentally denied MapQuest's request to use your physical location and remove the line that indicates www.mapquest.com is blocked so that you'll be prompted again the next time you visit MapQuest.com.

Mozilla Firefox location troubleshooting

In your Firefox browser, you can easily verify that MapQuest.com has permission to use your location by following a few easy steps:

  1. Enter “about:permissions” in Firefox's address bar
  2. Search for and click “www.mapquest.com” in the left panel
  3. Select “Always” under the Share Location dropdown to allow MapQuest to access your location for a more streamlined experience.

Apple Safari (Mac) location troubleshooting

If MapQuest.com in your Safari browser isn't locating you properly, or if you've denied MapQuest permission to use your location in the past but want to grant that permission now, you can easily reset all website location requests in Safari by following these easy steps:

  1. Click the Apple menu icon in the top left of your screen
  2. Click System Preferences then Security & Privacy
  3. Make sure you are on the Privacy tab then choose Location Services
  4. Check Enable Location Services (if the padlock is on click it to unlock)

This will ensure that you are asked if it's okay for MapQuest to use your current location the next time you visit MapQuest.com.

iOS (iPhone/iPad) location troubleshooting

If MapQuest on your iOS device isn't locating you properly, a good first step is to ensure that Location Services are enabled on your device and that MapQuest has permission to use them.

To do this, simply open your iOS Settings app and choose “Privacy,” then “Location Services.” From here, you'll be able to ensure that Location Services is toggled to ON for both your device and for the web browser app you use (scroll down for individual app permissions).

Android location troubleshooting

Most Android devices will allow you to review and manage both the location permissions for your device and for any individual apps by opening the main Settings app on your device and choosing "Location." With most Android devices you'll have to choose what kind of Location mode to enable on your device. For MapQuest to work best, you'll want to avoid using "Device only" mode, as this relies solely on the GPS in your device and does not use cellular and/or Wi-Fi data to assist in accurately locating you for navigation.

For the best MapQuest experience on your device, try using either "High accuracy" or "Battery saving" mode, both of which may use cellular and Wi-Fi data to locate you as accurately as possible.

Amazon device location troubleshooting

Most Amazon Fire tablets and phones have a simple setting in the main Settings app that allows you to either enable or disable location-based services. If your device has an Applications list in this menu, you'll want to make sure that location services are enabled for MapQuest and the web browsing app you use in addition to enabling them for the device itself.
